Do you use non ethanol gas ?

Its simply amazing to me how all the cwazy stuff gets disseminated. I use E10 in my garden stuff BECAUSE it stores better. Things like my tiller and chainsaw get used only once a year, and the gas is several years old. Still run perfect. Gooey...OMG myths galore. E10 ABSORBS water and makes...

    Modern Engine Thoughts

Many seem to forget the maintenance / service thing. Try to find a mechanic that will work on a 2-stroke. In my area there are tons of boat dealers. Only 1 will take in an oil burner, and that's all he does. Wait in line. Even worse, some places won't even work on a carbed I/O over XX years...

Do you use non ethanol gas ?

I haven't had trouble with plugged carbs BECAUSE I run E10. In my area they were selling this stuff to us for a couple years and we didn't know. Sure we all noticed a slight drop in mpg, but nobody had problems until after they told us. Gotta have something to blame for poor maintenance.

An E-Tec 'Rude in today's world is maybe a moot point. It's like buying an OMC I/O.

    Elgin 5HP motor

I have a '54 5 HP, as shown in the pictures. The telltale hole is to the left of the sticker, right behind the tiller handle bracket.

Disconnecting the fuel line, let engine burn gas ?

In all the years I ran triple carb motors I did the disconnect as well. If the pistons aren't already lubed with a lot of oil, then something else is wrong because a few seconds with no gas ain't gonna hurt it. My 1955 Mercury outboard owner's manual says to use gas stabilizer during the off...

Disconnecting the fuel line, let engine burn gas ?

Grandpa gave me my first outboard motor in 1965. He told me to run the gas out when I was done using kit. I've been doing that ever since, with no exception. I have read that some of the very small 4-strokes with little carbs will eventually have problems if gas is left in. I have 3.5 and...

    2004 21 Seaswirl Striper

I think without a T-top that was the standard (base model) engine for that boat. With the right prop I don't see a problem. I didn't look it up on NADA. You should do that before deciding what its worth. That's a quality boat, but only if its been taken care of.

Yet another - how to paint my trailer post :)

Its been a long time, so I had to google it. Apparently, it has been superseded. Personally, the rust reformer in COMBINATION with the fish oil was my claim to success. But that's just my opinion. At the time, (36 years ago) I was a paint chemist and had access to a lot of data...

Zinc Chromate primer is THE answer, but its a health hazard and not available everywhere. Etching primer works "almost" as good.

    Modern Engine Thoughts

My collection of outboards totals 69. Four are 4-strokes, mounted on daily drivers. I LOVE the smell of a 2-stroke. I also like to tinker. May of my 2-strokes are run on occasion in my classic boats. Its a hobby. I bought my first 4-stroke in 2017. Bought a kicker shortly after. Traded...

Yet another - how to paint my trailer post :)

Wire brush to remove scale. Prime it with Rustoleum rust reformer. Then topcoat with Rustoleum Fish Oil primer. Finish coat with the Rustoleum enamel color of your choice. I did that with a totally rusty trailer back in 1986. I sold it in 2009 and it still looked like new.

    In dash GPS speedo?

The "best" speedometer I ever had was on my last boat. It was a paddle wheel on an Eagle Sonar Unit. My river has a 1 mph current. If I was going upstream at 30 GPS, the downstream was (obviously) 32. The paddle wheel showed 31 (actual water speed) no matter which way I went. My Yami PWC...

    In dash GPS speedo?

In the olden days I ran a performance curve as baseline data on a new boat. My reasoning was twofold. First to optimize the prop pitch, and secondly to review data annually to see if I was losing performance, and thus needed a tuneup. Back then I was lucky enough to live where boat races were...

    In dash GPS speedo?

That is exactly what IS practical. Going one place to another is one thing. But if you are doing a performance curve on a boat the GPS is worthless.

    How much trim?

I had a trim gauge in the dash. With the boat out of the water on the trailer I trimmed up until the OD was just above the keel. Then noted the position on the gauge. Surely, it was above the trim range, and into the tilt range. At that position I could run over anything as long as the boat...

    In dash GPS speedo?

Yes its cool. But if it gets clogged its because there is an air hole in the tube. 35 years on a pitot and it was spot on even after all those years.
