Converting from vertical 2x4 to horizontal 2x6 bunks

A protruding "keel" is not necessary to have keel rollers. In your case I would use flat rollers on every trailer crossmember. They will not only add more support, but you won't believe how easy the boat is to launch. The Lyman in my signature has been riding on two 1 1/2" 3 foot long bunks...

Converting from vertical 2x4 to horizontal 2x6 bunks

I never did it, so I can't help. My question, though, would be why? Many many boats riding on 1 1/2" wood, certainly many are a lot bigger than a Jon. If it were me I'd add a set of keel rollers and call it a day. ()which is what I have done many times, including the 3 boats I currently own)...

    Montgomery Wards Sea King Outboard

Its a 1971 3.0 HP. Hunn's Old Outboard Book suggests a $50 value for a motor in good running original condition. It's value is as a "user", not a "collector".

    Acceptable trailering?

I towed with an Equinox (Chevy version of the Terrain) for 9 years with a boat of similar weight. It had the factory towing package with a factory 1 1/4" hitch. I didn't give it a second thought.

Towing over rough terrain with outboard down?

NEVER trailer with the outboard down. Use a transom saver or secure the engine with a twobyfore and bungees if you don't want to spend money. MY FIL and I had this argument for many years. His last 5 miles to his camp was a rough dirt / stone road. His last trip with the motor tilted up was...

    Plastic Tanks are All Junk

I bought a plastic tank in about 1975. It went into the trash shortly after. I have restored several boats and always was able to find an old metal tank for cheep prices. A little elbow grease and some fresh paint and they all work like new. I must admit m y Whaler came with a pair of Tempo...

    New Boat blues

I agree with what you said.....mostly. I replaced points 25 years ago and never looked back. The pertronics ignition made the boat run a lot better and of course eliminated a lot of maintenance. I know, I know, people say they are junk. When I sold the boat it had been in use for decades and...

    New Boat blues

Most any boat can have stellar performance if the prop is optimized. Now, if you want a family boat that can provide hours of enjoyment, that;s what to do. If you NEED the fastest boat on the water to show off to your friends, buy a boat with a humongous engine and be willing to pay at the pump.

2005 Yamaha WaveRunner® FX High Output

The owner's manual is quite clear about lubricating the cables. Steering issues is a no-brainer. This engine is noted for needing new plugs every few years. The forward / reverse mechanisms are more easy peasy normal maintenance. If the thing won't move, maybe your reverse gate was never...

    Backing up

I never saw anyone back off a trailer. Some of us push the boats off and the rest float them off. I guess our ramps bust be pretty good.

    Modern Engine Thoughts

As an old buddy of mine once said: "I didn't buy a boat to save money".

    "Tohatsu" no model/serial #?

If boats and trailers alone are registered in your name, you are OK. If OBs are registered and titled as as well, you're screwed. (Like Ohio to name one) It sounds like its a Tohatsu, so maybe a Merc private label. Go to a Merc dealer and maybe he can fix you up. 1935 Seahorses are awesome...

    "Tohatsu" no model/serial #?

Can't tell by the pics what it is. Show us a pic of the cowl. Based on what you have described, its a classic example of a stolen motor.

    Dealing with insurance,boat totaled?

Been there done that. His liability, his insurance. Your agreed value should have nothing to do with it because your insurance company won't have to pay out. In my case, the repair quote was more than his insurance company said the boat was worth. They offered a lowball price and I balked...

Do you use non ethanol gas ?

When I was a teenager my Dad bought a brandspanking new Pontiac land yacht for my Mom for their 20th anniversary. It was Mom's first car. The owner's manual said it was good for leaded gas, but unleaded was OK. It bothered Dad because he wasn't sure what to do. Later, leaded was outlawed, so...

Do you use non ethanol gas ?

As a Chemical Engineering major (back in the late 1960's) we all had to design a factory from the ground up. All the professors chose ethanl plants as our example. Don't know what that means, but ethanol was popular even back then.

Do you use non ethanol gas ?

That's the winner.......LOL. Back in the day in Winter we all added ethanol (aka dry gas) to the gas tank to safely get us thru the snow season healthy. But the youngins never heard of that and the boomers were too lazy. (Where is Ralph Nader when you need him.......LOL)

Do you use non ethanol gas ?

You just shot yourself in the foot with that quote. If the govmt says it's so, you must believe its not true. Ethanol in gas was not done for ecological or environmental reasons. It's all political and that's all I'm going to say about that. I personally don't care what any professor or...
