    ----Use the 6 vane impeller comes in the 432955 kit !----That kit is the one that I install on 70 HP from 1980 to 2001 models.----All the same.------No issue with water getting into the gear oil.-------No idea why you would say that the 6 vane causes water intrusion ??

    Your local boat shop might have a box with props from a 15 / 18 HP Johnson / Evinrude from the 1960's----Remove the prop nut and that hub might give them a clue.

    Which bearing ?----What did the gears look like ??------You are installing new bearings ?----Checking pinion height with the replacement thrust bearing.----Any pictures of the bottom of the driveshaft bearing housing ?

    Well ---21-23/32" is correct.----Measured with lower unit in neutral.----It MUST be set at that height !

    Check the flywheel key.----Make sure plug wires are on correct cylinder.

    I believe that is the wrong switch for your motor !-----The battery is not used to make spark for the sparkplugs on this motor.----And yes there is only one wire on the neutral switch.-----Stop ----Get the correct wiring diagram before you damage the coils etc !!

    There are other solutions.-----An old belt on a stick used as a strap wrench.----A 1/4" X2" flat bat of steel drilled for those bolts in the flywheel.----All easy to make in a jiffy if you have the stuff and a small budget.

    It should be installed clean and dry.----The key locates the flywheel for proper spark timing.----The flywheel is driven by the locking tapers.-----Yes they are tough to pull for a novice.-----So remove it.----Clean the tapers.----Torque nut to proper value.

    Your rod height in post #9 makes no sense !---Late production motor is more like 21-11/32---- I think.----Best find the chart for these motors.

    Remove coil from distributor cap.----Note , Wire is threaded in.-----Test and see if spark comes out of the coil.

    Any damage on top of #3 piston ?----If not the motor was likely rebuilt.----Any numbers on top of #3 piston.----Numbers on others ?-----Broken piston rings is a very , very common failure on crossflow engines.----Will happen to all of them.----It will run fine with the damage to that cylinder head.

    Adjustment is at the shift lever.-----But if it has been jumping for a while you might be in for an expensive surprise.-----Clutch dog and forward gear.----Your location ?-----No adjustment inside the gearcase either.-----I would be taking the lower unit apart for a look..
