Electrical noise from a 9.8 hp Merc

    Good morning all

I have a mid 70's Mercury, model 110, 9.8hp motor that I was running last week. It will start up and idle fine. Everything sounds normal at low to mid throttle. But when I go to full throttle, I hear what I would call an arcing sound. I'm not sure what it is but I...

early 70's merc, 9.8 hp carb problem

I have an early 70's merc 110, 9.8 hp. I believe it to be a 1973 model. Most often than not I can't get it to start. If it does start, it won't stay running. I took the carb of to give it a good cleaning. I notice two things. One, the inlet needle in the float boat wasn't moving in and out when...

    1954 10hp Johnson runs rough

I'm working on a 1954 10 hp Johnson. It was hard to start and it ran rough. I cleaned up the carb and put a new kit in it. It starts easier now but I can't seem to find the right points for the high and low speed adjustments. I can start it but when I start adjusting for the high/low speed it...

69 Johnson, 6hp water pump problems

I replaced the water pump in my 1969, 6HP Johnson. I fired it up and still no water comes out. I'm sure I put the impellar in correctly. I found out there is no thermostat where it is suppose to be. Could this be part of my problem? Where else should I check?

71 Johnson 9.5hp water pump question

    Hello all

I have a 1971 9.5hp Johnson, model number 9r-71r that has sat around a couple of years. I cleaned up the carb and got it started. I checked to see if the water pump was doing it's job but for the life of me, I couldn't find where the water comes out in this motor. I've heard...

    71 Johnson 9.9hp carb rebuild

    Hello

I'm cleaning a carburetor on a 1971 Johnson, 9.5 hp. Model Number 9r-71r. I got everything off except the high speed orifice. I can't get it out and I've applied quite a bit of pressure on it to turn it out. I'm affraid of busting it so I gave up and soaked it in carb cleaner...

water pump in a 69 johnson

I'm changing a water pump in 69 Johnson, 6hp. After I pulled the lower end, I noticed a hole in the drive shaft about 3/4 of the ways up. I looked in my service manual and it shows a pin in that hole. I looked around my work area for the pin in case it fell out while removing the lower end.I...

    71 Johnson 9.9hp won't run

I have a 1971 9.9hp Johnson with a short shaft. I can get it to turn over but it won't stay running. It stalls out shortly after starting. I replaced the fuel pump and it took care of the problem for a short time but now I have the same problem again. I have also replaced the coils as one of...

    gap tolerances

I have some older Johnson and Evinrude motors from the late 50's to the early 70's from 5.5 to 10 hp. Correct me if I'm wrong but the gap setting for these is .020. Should the feeler gage go through the gap smoothly or should there be a little restriction? Also is there a tolerance here, that is...

    best decarb treatment

I know this topic has been discussed here before, so forgive me for bringing it up again. I have a 1959, 5.5hp Evinrude and a 1974 9.5hp Johnson. I have read doing a decarb might help bring up the compression. What is the best treatment for these motors, where can I get it and what is the...

    What is it worth?

I've never own a boat before and I'm thinking of buying a used one. Is there a site out there that has a Kelly blue book version for boats to see what they are worth? If not, how do I find out if I'm paying to much or not for a boat?

Thanks

loss of power in 59 Evinrude

I have a 1959 5.5 hp Evinrude that seems to have lost some of it's power at full throttle. I've got good spark and compression in both cylinders and I cleaned the carb. It starts up after a couple of pulls and idles nicely but when I throttle up it runs rough and not as fast. Someone told me...

    merc runs at half power

I have a 1971 merc, 9.8 hp. It is hard to start unless I squirt some starting fluid in, then it will start by the second pull. Once it starts it will idle fine and run on slow speed fine but when I throttle up to full speed I hear a electrical crackling sound that may go away or it may not. But...
