Re: 197? SS Inside Out Restoration (New Title)

Hey there jb, sorry to hear you had a bad night bud. I feel your pain bud, I had to remove my outdrive with a hammer and screw drivers as it was so corroded that it would not move. Also wound up having to cut my prop off as it would not come off either. This boat of mine has been one adventure after another, but I still try to keep my chin up and keep going. Things will work out for you dude, one way or another.

At this point I wish I had something inspirational to say...you know with the theme to "Rocky" playing in the background or some cool soundtrack. Instead, I think maybe a visit to the outboard forums might actually cheer you up! Some of those poor SOB's are really in trouble:eek: You got this dude. Take the night off, forget about it for a day and come up with a plan.

Re: 197? SS Inside Out Restoration (New Title)

Thanks guys! It isnt that the motor issues are out of my league, its just Id like to be finished with this already... Just another set back before the splash. I was leary about the select shift motor to begin with, now Im just kicking myself for not following my instinct and selling it right from the get go. Id much rather have My Merc 1000 hanging off the back, atleast its water pump kit doesnt run $100+. Its just a shame because the power head on the Rude runs so well, it was rebuilt only 8 years ago with minimum use since then.

The plan is to get this Rude back up and running and use it this season (pray nothing else takes a dump) and rewire the Merc in the meantime. Over the winter do a motor swap and recut another transom so it wont look like swiss cheese...

Re: 1972 SS Inside Out Restoration (New Title)

So after seaching for the better half of a week I finally tracked down a replacement shift cable for my lower unit. The guy that had it for sale actually had two of them! I couldnt believe it! I figured Id probably never come across another one in decent shape I decided to buy both! To the tune of $125:eek:

With that said I also replaced the water pump housing and the water guide tubes which were both totally shot! The water pump chrome was missing pieces and the rubber gromets were cracked and dry rotted.

After I replaced everything I called my buddy and asked when the last time he replaced the impeller. His response was, and I quote "Whats the water pump?":eek:: I guess he just got really lucky over the last 6 years!!!

Oh and I almost forgot, when it came time to start her up last night I found that the battery had died:facepalm: Somehow over the last 2 months the battery was shuffled around and ended up on the garage floor.... So Im having to wait another few hours for it to complete a charge. Keep your fingers crossed!! I sure hope this damn thing shifts:confused:

Well after all the work over the past couple months I finally splashed the ole' girl today! everything went really well! I had my brother and father out to join me for the "fun in the sun" The SS is really a great boat, I prefer it hands down over the Alumacraft Qween Merrie. It handled the confused chop very well and was a very dry ride compared to what the QM offered in the past!

Re: 1972 SS Inside Out Restoration (New Title)

Thanks guys! We def had a blast! I have a few steering quirks to sort out and I found a hole under the knee brace that will need to be repaired before I head back out this sunday. But all in all it was a great test run!

I recieved a present today from my buddy the PO, it was the full service records for the motor including the paperwork for the total rebuild done in '97. The motor was rebuilt due to a bad crank bearing, punched out and carbs rejetted! I knew there was some work done but I didnt realize to what extent. My buddy claims 50 mph (gps) but we will see come next sun. I need to get the steering link sorted out before I even think of WOT tests lol. I had the old ball and socket link come apart while on the water last sun!!! I ordered a new Clevis kit from IB and hope it comes by Fri.

As for the hole in the bottom... I couldnt figure out why the bilge was running evey 5 minutes! when we returned and loaded up I noticed a pencile sized stream of water coming from the keel. Turns out the hole is right under the knee brace and directly above the last roller on the trailer lol, no wonder I didnt see it! So I think a SS sheet metal screw and a lot of 5200 will solve that issue.

Im looking forward to getting back out Sun, doing some fishing and taking more pics! Stay tuned! =)

Funny, I had the exact same hole in my Jupiter. Right under the knee brace and leaked a steady stream. Slapped some JB Weld on it and that solved like 90% of my leakage.

I knew I missed a major hole when I checked and found 4" of standing water in the bilge! It was also at that point I remembered I forgot to connect the + lead from the auto on the pump to the bat lol. Needless to say the pump ran for almost 3 minutes! Just sucks that the bilge and foam got soaked, but oh well, nothing I can do about that I guess?

I wouldn't let it keep me up all night. Foam's either soaked or it isn't. If it's soaked, it happened long before your ownership.

Re: 1972 SS Inside Out Restoration (New Title)

Took some time today to install the new steering clevis and repair the pencile sized hole in the stern. The hole patch was a breeze! I drove in a 1/4" SS sheet metal screw and loaded it up with some 5200. Im not too sure how well paint will stick to it come the fall, but Id rather have a dry boat than a sweet keel paint job lol.

The steering clevis was a little more involved. The install on the tiller was a piece of cake, however having to move the cable bracket was a pain! The ball and socket on the pervious setup had 2 in. of over hang on the port side. With the new setup the clevis connected facing the SB side of the motor and subtracted another inch of travel in the cable. So altogether there was a total loss of 3 in. of travel in the steering cable... I just barely had enough room to move the bracket over 3 in. to allow enough cable to recenter the motor. But after a couple hours shes better than new! The steering is much tighter than before and there isnt nearly as much play in the wheel. I cant wait til Sunday to try it out!!!

The only thing that erks me is when I removed the bracked it pulled up all the paint around it... Not that its a big deal, just goes to show how permanent 5200 is lol. I was lucky to get the scews out for that matter! I can see a steady flow of Rustoleum spray can purchases in the future =)

Re: 1972 SS Inside Out Restoration (New Title)

Finally found a buyer for the 18' pos fiberglass boat that was on my new trailer! I sold it for $100 if you can believe it! So with it gone I finally had a chance today to replace the bunks, bearings, wheels and tires. I think I have all my measurements right??? We will find out when I make the trip to the ramp tomorrow to swap trailers. I decided to set the bunks to the outside of the strakes rather then the inside so the boat might be easier to load and trailer more stable. Like I said before, we will see when it comes time to swap them.

Here are a few picks

Re: 1972 SS Inside Out Restoration (New Title)

Bought a new toy for the boat today! I know it isnt one of the really cool color ones with the 50" screen, but it did have the best resolution out of all the ones under $100! I look forward to installing it this week and getting a chance to use it this weekend. If anyone out there has this model and has some insight let me know.

Re: 1972 SS Inside Out Restoration (New Title)

Hey guys, haven't check into the site in some time and just thought I'd update everyone with some photos. We've had some incredible weather this spring in Detroit, so I decided to get a jump start on repainting the hull of the SS. I decided to go with a red and white two tone and I really think it turned out well.

Here are a few progress pics.
