For sure a stringer, if it's in good shape you may get a good buck for it.

Have located 5 donor boats todate. But they all have the 5.7 engine with accompanying outdrive.
Ok guys need your help making up my mind on repower please. Have located 5 donor boats todate. But they all have the 5.7 engine with accompanying outdrive. 2 of them have been recently rebuilt. Also located a omc 302 ford with outdrive that had just been rebuilt for 300.00 $. Am not in a big hurryto splash, ha who am I kidding.Your input will be greatly appreciated. Oh should tell you the omc is motor & outdrive only. All the rest would be a trailer & donor boat.:decision:
Thanks for helping me on my decision DJ. It just so happens have 4.3 in our Blazer & 5.7 in big red, my pick up. Of course know night and day between running an engine in a car vs. A boat. The OB version of your boat is rated for 240hp, so I wouldn't see a problem with a 5.7 @ 260hp....
..and it can't be much heavier than a 4.3 as its all basically the same except 2 more cylinders and the accompanying block and head to go around them...
Thank you GA; Going to look at a donor boat tomorrow I think. Owner just called but forgot to ask h/p of engine. Call back he he. He will start and idle up for me.Of course think even if it has 120 h/ p think will buy and flip. There is a big reason the OMC is only $300. First, Ford marine parts are almost nonexistent and $$$$. Second, it's an OMC. Third, if it was just rebuilt, why only $300?
Stick with MerCruiser. A 5.7 M/C would be real nice in a 22' Islander.
According to Boattest.com a Mercruiser 4.3 complete weighs 848lbs and a 5.7 complete weighs 888Lbs, that makes the choice pretty simple.
Still licking my wound from wasted trip.:
You will prolly find a lot of that kind of thing looking for a donor boat holding a good engine.
One thing I'll say about the hunt, you really gotta assume any engine you find is good for parts unless proven otherwise.
So many of these boats have been left to rot and die, including the engine. It doesn't take any effort at all for a fella to leave the block filled with sea water only to freeze up and trash it.
Be careful and find just the right one, it's out there.
