For sure a stringer, if it's in good shape you may get a good buck for it.

Thanks Glen; Have been looking on line for a mercruiser. Dont know if should buy motor & outdrive seperately, or as a package?:confused:Need to do some more research.

Not long after I got my stringer drive home I taught it how to fly....

Then I sold it off in a jif!

Your best bet is to find a dead fiberglass boat with a good running, complete driveline (kind of a rare combination unfortunately). That way you have everything you need all in one shot. Otherwise, piecing it all together really starts to add up $$$$.

Rock on:rockon:

The best way is a package, in a boat, all complete - A Donor. Pull the driveline and other good stuff and visit you local fiberglass recycling center.

Ok guys need your help making up my mind on repower please. Have located 5 donor boats todate. But they all have the 5.7 engine with accompanying outdrive. 2 of them have been recently rebuilt. Also located a omc 302 ford with outdrive that had just been rebuilt for 300.00 $. Am not in a big hurryto splash, ha who am I kidding.Your input will be greatly appreciated. Oh should tell you the omc is motor & outdrive only. All the rest would be a trailer & donor boat.:decision:

Skip the 302.

5.7 in a 22' Islander??

:car::plane:

You sure won't be short on power!

Yah, I suppose if that's what you are finding I'd go for it. You just don't need to hammer down all the time anyway:thumb:

The OB version of your boat is rated for 240hp, so I wouldn't see a problem with a 5.7 @ 260hp....

..and it can't be much heavier than a 4.3 as its all basically the same except 2 more cylinders and the accompanying block and head to go around them...

There is a big reason the OMC is only $300. First, Ford marine parts are almost nonexistent and $$$$. Second, it's an OMC. Third, if it was just rebuilt, why only $300?

Stick with MerCruiser. A 5.7 M/C would be real nice in a 22' Islander.

Thanks Jas; Just needed for some of my forum buddies to say what I was thinking. Was tempted by the quick turn around
time would probably get on the omc. But obsolete is never good for our toys. Yes that is a bit more power than I need, as you said just ease off of throttle a bit. May still locate a 4.3 engine & drive.;)

Thanks for helping me on my decision DJ. It just so happens have 4.3 in our Blazer & 5.7 in big red, my pick up. Of course know night and day between running an engine in a car vs. A boat.:plane:

20130531_135320.jpgView attachment 196222Getting ready for a short road trip to purchase a donor boat. Pics. to follow. Looks like this could be a wasted trip. Got here and the guy showed me a boat could not even tow. Told him the other boat was the one in add picture. Here are a couple pics of motor. Not started since 2008. If he will take 400.00$ might buy as can probably get that for trailer? Or perhaps just take my lumps and skulk home.Offered him 400, he said 600 btm. line. Said no thank you, to big of a pig in a poke. Bummer.

According to Boattest.com a Mercruiser 4.3 complete weighs 848lbs and a 5.7 complete weighs 888Lbs, that makes the choice pretty simple.

Yes it does Glen, The 5.7 wins hands down. As I told DJ they are both great motors in my land boats. The 5.7 has a bit more power, the 4.3 more economical. Still licking my wound from wasted trip. Just goes to show you even when your ducks are in a row things can still go sour. Real hard to twart dishonesty.:crutch:

You will prolly find a lot of that kind of thing looking for a donor boat holding a good engine.

One thing I'll say about the hunt, you really gotta assume any engine you find is good for parts unless proven otherwise.

So many of these boats have been left to rot and die, including the engine. It doesn't take any effort at all for a fella to leave the block filled with sea water only to freeze up and trash it.

Be careful and find just the right one, it's out there.

Catfishr1,

That's a nice looking boat you're working with!

I have a 21' Chieftain and I'm pretty sure your islander is a similar hull. If so I might be a little wary of running a 350, I have the 165HP 250 Chevy in my boat and I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable with another 100 horses on tap (especially if less experienced family & friends would be driving the boat).

I'd go with the 4.3, should be plenty of power and more economical to boot!

Yes, that is so true Jas. Although was bummed about 50$ of gas spent to get there and home, was very happy he did not take my 400$ offer. That was probably one of the first lessons learned about boats & motors. One of there greatest nemesis is non use, then to leave out in elements. I definitely will take my time my friend, that way can have exactly what I want. ;)
