Jack is doing good Puget, in the pics he is guarding the area from flying things, shadows, and whatever else is moving in the yard.

A year ago I was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes, what led me to find this out was my feet hurting all the time. I was an EMT for 13 years and I was seeing the symptoms that I knew for sure. And don't be sorry for asking bud, there is nothing wrong with that and I don't have a problem with telling what is going on.

Well my friend, there isn't much more that can be taken off. Can we go to rebuild mode now?:)

I am hoping so very soon Jason. I am still trying to find someone to weld up the plates on the transom before I go and start stuffing things back into her. I thought I found someone but that fell through, so need to find another welder. One that I don't have to drag the boat for over an hour to get to or have to go through downtown Portland.

I am going to be sealing up that transom this weekend I hope anyway. I want to overdrill the holes and then fill in and redrill. But I am not sure as to what to fill the holes with, I thought I remembered that Jason was going to do the same and am hoping he shows up here and lets me in on his recipe for filling holes.

Shoot man, where else would I be? Fishing? Boating? HHHhaaaaahaaahahahhaaa!!!!

:rolleyes::facepalm:

Yah, I just over drilled, mixed up some thick peanut butter (epoxy, wood flour)...

and filled one side of the hole. Once that was cured, I flipped the transom over and poured in straight epoxy to fill it up.

(Those little gray drops you see are from Self Leveling PL that I used for the fat alum backers used on the eye bolts)

Hope that makes sense.

I am just about out of epoxy so the transom for the Jet Star will likely get PL squirted in those holes. Should work just as well.

Ok bud, that is what I thought that you had done. I hate to be stupid here but by wood flour do mean like saw dust? That is kind of what it looks like from here anyway.

Yup saw dust. But the fine stuff like you would find in the dust collection bag of your random orbital sander. Not so much what you find under your table saw.

Re: Well I did it now! 67 Islander Rebuild

Thanks for the info Jason, greatly appreciated bud.

Another question for you guys. If I were to rivet the patches on the transom do you think that the flattened side of the rivets would affect the way the wood transom sits in there? I have been thinking about all this patch stuff and that welding it may mess things up as there needs to be either one great big patch or several smaller ones. I am worried about the welding close to the edges and causing warpage to the sealing surfaces between the hull and transom. I think that solid rivets would be a whole lot cheaper to do, especially since I already have a bunch of them and all the tools to install them with. Let me hear what you all think of this idea.

I understand not wanting to drive thru Portland pulling a boat. I don't like driving there with just a car. My daughter went to college in Forrest Grove, so I know a little something about driving there. Fear. I don't think you will get a perfect fit with either a weld, which is apt to warp, or rivets. My transom had about 3/16 as a guess slop outside the plywood as it came. A lot less on a cold morning, probably about end of April I was working on that, and a little more on a hot (yea right this year) day. Someone in some thread here said pertaining to seams that welded was more apt to crack and cause damage, and rivets usually held better,a and you could tighten them. I probably messed it up, but read that here a couple months ago.

Thanks heyyou, that is what I was thinking as well. But could not remember if I read it here or someone was telling that about welding. I think that I am going to wind up doing rivets for the patches, I was not so worried about just the one patch but now it is going to have to be several or a rather large one.

As I said on here not long ago the wife bought some paint for the boat, colors of blue yellow and white. White is going to be the top or cap of the boat, but now she is not so much digging the blue and yellow. I have been messing with the pics on photobucket and coloring the pic, finally ditched the blue and made one with black. I think that she likes it a lot or at least that is what she said. Here it is as best as I could do with what I had to work with.

After messing with photobucket I decided to move the boat and just see what I could do about taking it off the trailer. I was not ready to take it off but wanted to see how big of a PITA it was going to be alone. Look what happened when I gave it a gentle push, and I do mean gentle. I don't think I pushed hard enough that I would have moved Jack if I had been pushing on him.

This afternoon I decided it time for a second coat of epoxy on the one side of the transom wood and also a first coat on the window support.

100_0567.jpg

Well mind you it was close to 90 out there today and I was not thinking. I mixed up a batch that would have been big enough to do both pieces of wood. Well I think that I mixed to much for the temp it was outside as it started to kick like crazy. I looked into the pot I had in my hand and it was freaking smoking, almost panic'd for a min. Well here is a big lump of stuff that setup like I had no idea that it could do that way.

Well just so you know that I have not been slacking on this really nice but rather warm day. Here is another pic of the boat tilted back on the trailer, you can see the paint on the bow and down the side.

And here is pretty much the same shot later in the day.

Here are a couple of the other side as well. I pretty much got the top part of the cap done on this side and some of the bottom.

Man my arms and feet are freaking killing me this evening. Had to use a ladder to be able to reach a lot of the top of the sides. Hope you all had a very good day.

That is ClarkCraft 1 to 1 epoxy, I think that it was just to freaking hot out there for that much epoxy. Can you use the Spar Varnish to seal up the transom like the epoxy?

In hot weather make small batches of epoxy, or any similar resin as a lot of them heat up faster in the heat. Takes more time and accessories but you don't get it setting up too soon on you.

Hey Kelly great progress you are making. I use urethane Spar varnish to seal my transoms and floor. If you think about it Starcraft never sealed them with anything and the lasted 25+ years in boats that were only moderatly looked after. I put three coats of urethane on everything. So If my boat only sees normal use and is covered or inside the whole time I'm not using it, it should last 80+ years.

Keep the pace man it's looking good. Stripping paint can be a really tough job for sure.
