Re: 93 Bayliner 1800 Capri Outboard Restoration Project

Ok...quick question. Originally there was a separate piece of 1/2 ply under the deck over the gas tank, and then the 1/2 deck. I am going back with 5/8 deck do I still need that separate piece of 1/2 over gas tank? Also where is a good thread on how to mount gas tank...especially what to put under it. Before was two pieces of 1/2 ply under each side classed to the hull, but no rubber strips etc. Fyi...my tank is plastic.

I have a plastic tank as well. I was thinking of using some single sided foam tape about 1/4thick and 2inch wide in strips
thats what was under there before on mine. There wasn't any added ply under any of my old deck but we have a different stringer system

I have a wholesale account at a local paint store. I was wanting to get some bilge paint, but they said to find out what exact type of paint it is as they did not know what bilge paint was. Also I didn't ask yet, but is gel coat a generic name or what is it also called chemically I guess. Thanks

You will probably not find either of those 2 products at a normal paint store.

1 brand name bilge paint: Interlux BilgeKote, others are available. Iboats may even sell it.

Gelcoat is a type of fiberglass polyester resin, so it is usually found w/ suppliers of the resin. But it is not easy to apply successfully, by roller or gun, but can be done. It is applied in many multiple layers, and sanded & faired after to achieve a smooth finish. Look for a Yacht Dr thread on choosing to use & applying gelcoat... I'm fairly sure it was him, but I don't have the thread bookmarked. Search his user name & gelcoat maybe....

If you are considering using gelcoat for some areas of your boat, that will also work in the bilge. I think Friscoboater did 1 of each & recently commented in his searay thread about it when asked. (BTW: As I remember he used 1 or the other or again 1 of each in his ski locker) Probably in late April or early May.

Re: 93 Bayliner 1800 Capri Outboard Restoration Project

Trailering the boat, not in a slip all summer, correct?

I think I would use 1 of the several products that many people @iBoats have used in the past. Rustoleum & tractor supply paints have been used w/ good results as well as some of the 'recommended' marine paints by Interlux & others. For both above & below the waterline. Not that that epoxy won't work. But some have had less then great results w/ some of the epoxy & non-epoxy products that were recommended by the manufacturer for marine use, the last I remember reading was unfavorable performance of Easypoxy on a tin boat I believe.

So why would the rep not recommend 1 of the MARINE Sher-W paints listed along the left margin of that epoxy's page? Their SeaGaurd 6000 is rated for water immersion. See if you can find any references online in other forums for or against the Sher-W marine paints. It might prove interesting & possibly another great product for use @glass & tin boats too.

Based on the work & progress so far, I suspect that you'll do whatever is necessary to get good results w/ whatever you choose for paint, bilgekote &/or gelcoat.

But again, were the bilgekote & gelcoat just for below decks, not topside @ the cap or on the deck & interior?

Ok....this will be for the bilge, ski locker, and deck. The rep said that their "marine" coatings worked better on metal, and this would perform better on fiberglass as it flexed better. I have a friend who says he has a gun to spray this coating. I want to spray it all white....then turn air pressure way down and try to splatter black coating very lightly. My hull exterior is getting a viny wrap of white and black digital cammo.

It's your boat, and you can do as you see fit. Who know's, you may have found a great product for Marine use. If you don't mind being the Guinea Pig then GO FOR IT!!!!:D

I was just working on putting sealant back under rub rail.....and noticed what looks like a plastic film on the hull exterior. I peel a small piece off and it really looks like a very thin clear plastic.....any ideas what this is?

Re: 93 Bayliner 1800 Capri Outboard Restoration Project

Is it a thin/narrow strip of film that runs all the way around the hull, just at the rubrail?

Just a guess, but I'd bet it could be a factory installed protective film that was installed prior to mating the hull & cap. Either to protect the hull while it was handled & moved at the factory while waiting to be mated to the cap, as the hull is probably under multiple configurations of cap. And/or to protect the hull in transit to the dealer. Either way, once the rubrail was installed, a portion of the film was captive behind the rubrail & when you put the cap back on, the rubrail location moved just enough to expose some of the film left behind when the bulk of it was removed.

Again just a guess....

Actually it is the opposite. It was not behind the rub rail, but all over the side of hull. I am going to take a pic or a video later and show what it looks like.

I'm with JB...sounds like some sort of protective film.

Just weird it has lasted on boat since 93. Or could you spray something like that on?

Re: 93 Bayliner 1800 Capri Outboard Restoration Project

Is it a fairly stout thin film? Or once you start to peel it, it tears/shreds pretty easy?

Since Bayliners of this vintage have a bad rep for overall build quality w/ regards to care & attention during the fiberglass layup stages of the hull build, perhaps they started to shoot the inside of the hull mold w/ some sort of a combination release film/semi-permanent 'plastic' wrap like what you plan w/ the Blk&Wht camo... Much quicker & easier then re-training the mold layup crew, or fully inspecting the hulls prior to taking them out of the mold. Or a PO wrapped it before you got it.... The condition of the hull once you remove it may help point out a why &/or who installed it.

It is just really good protective film that just never got removed because they were cranking bare hulls out as fast as possible & then racking & stacking them in a stockpile until ready to be finished & capped. Heck, call Bayliner, you've got an original HIN, correct?

Interesting & strange for sure..... Isn't there a Bayliner only forum online? Ya might join that group & ask some Q's. Be sure to keep your thread updated about the film & the Sher-W paint you choose.....

We love helping solve other people's boat problems, esp if it involves throwing money at the problem:rolleyes: Or they're testing out some new info/materials etc etc etc:cool:

Your original question reminded me of the stuff some highend bathtubs & sink fixtures come with from the factory. It's shot or brushed on at the factory & peels just like film once installed & adjacent construction/tile work is also complete. There's also a somewhat rubbery blue version that the GC or plumber can brush on just after installation too, but that is much different look & feel then anything that might be considered a film.

It tears apart in tiny pieces...it is very thin...clear, and you cannot peel it off with your fingers. Saying it is adhered very well to the hull. You have to use a razor blade to get it to separate...which is what happened while I was cleaning off the silicone that was under original rub rail base. FYI...it is only on the hull. the top cap has none.

Re: 93 Bayliner 1800 Capri Outboard Restoration Project

The mystery deepens.....

I'd try Bayliner, but without getting my hands on it both on & off the hull, I don't think it's a film. I suspect it is some sort of spray application. As a 1993 Bayliner, there has been ample time for a PO to have a clear coat of some sort applied to the hull.

Are there any areas of the hull where you can see the fiberglass weave telegraphing through the white gelcoat? It would occur over time w/ overly aggressive buffing & cutting of the gelcoat to restore it's shine. Or just once after many years of neglect.

My FireFlite has it BAD on most of both sides of the hull. Because it was harder to access & less visible, I'm hoping the underwater portions of the hull aren't as bad.

Did you try the Bayliner forum yet? Not the Bayliners owners group @ iBoats. But that might be a good place to drop a what the heck do ya think this is.....

Just a wild shot in the dark...but could it possibly be that the PO shot some kind of clearcoat/sealant on the hull and this is what's left......after wind, water, buffing and time have taken their toll...

Re: 93 Bayliner 1800 Capri Outboard Restoration Project

Man, had a busy weekend! Didn't get much time on the boat, but got with windshield installed and fixed the alignment which was off from the factory installation. Glad I put windshield on ....took a large clamp and pulled cap together by a little over 1/2 and inch before finishing front bulkheads and starting to get floor cut out.

I have read that the pourable foam can be used to install gas tank. Anyone every done that for a gas tank?
