Re: Carver 2357 Montego

too late.

One time when i was topping off this weekend the unit started to drop and thus began to push out fluid. The old was really pretty nasty looking. Could this be causing issues? Also if i drained and started fresh i would know what amount i was putting in, thus knowing if it was full. Of course, helps to know how much it takes...

and i've been using hydraulic oil, but reading ATF or 10W30.. THink what i'm using is causing any issues?

well i've been doing it wrong...

on the outboard i check with unit up; here it says unit down. Not sure why when it dropps it pushes fluid out. Also have not checked the vent screw. Wonder if that would be the issue.

So, are you going to do any actual work to the boat... or is this a trailer resto thread?

Sorry I didn't read the words, but the lack of pictures and actual boat work makes this thread 3 pages of less than interesting.

Re: Carver 2357 Montego

I have always used trim/tilt fluid. It is thinner then the most common (303) hydraulic fluid. ATF is hydraulic fluid with different additives. Some newer hydraulic systems are using synthetic motor oils.

Re: Carver 2357 Montego

The earlier trim pumps used 30w oil. You say it pushes out oil but never mention where. The most common place is from the short hydraulic hoses between the rams and the out drive. The rubber under the shielding will crack - but I didn't see any oil deposits on the hoses in any of the pics. The next most likely place is the seal inside the rams (easy fix and kits available and relatively inexpensive) that will allow pressured oil to pass over to the other side. On a boat that old (and sitting so long) resealing the rams is a job I'd do anyway.

FYI - the rams are part of the 'reservoir system' There is oil on both sides of the pistons as well as in the pump. Pressure is applied to whichever side (up or down) is being used and oil on the non-pressure side flows freely back to the pump reservoir. The only other thing that could go 'bad' (assuming the pump motor is working and making pressure) would be the 'check valve' inside the pump (not an easy job and better left to a pro).

Yeah
That's what i'm going to check is the rams. If i block in the up position and the the hoses off Nd plug the hold and remove the block if the ram is good it wont fall. Then should be the pump unfortunately. At least thats what the internet says.

Hey mellow the lines from the pump going to the back of the block, where does it go? Im kinda afraid i have a leak can't see but really dont want to have to pull the engine.

And if the pump is bad can i replace with newer rather than the old prestolit

Re: Carver 2357 Montego

No need to remove the engine. The hoses from the rams attach to a 'manifold' on the bottom of the transom side of the gimbal housing and the hoses from the pump attach on the other side of the manifold so they can be replaced without removing the engine. Two bolts, accessible from the outside once the ram hoses are removed, hold the manifold in place.

If the pump is lifting and lower the out drive normally and then it starts to go down by itself and there is no oil puddle in the bilge or leaks from the ram hoses it sounds more like a pressure leak in the rams.

If the boat was left for an extended period of time with the out drive in the up position without the "UP position' external support hook the rams are the primary 'suspect', the check valve in the pump would be next.

If the pump is NG I have a used 'spare' for cheap if that is an early or pre-Alpha I/O. Make sure the rams are OK first.

Re: Carver 2357 Montego

fired up first turn of the key. Didn't stay running but close. Third turn ran perfectly. Sat at the dock for about 15 minutes letting it get happy then took her out.

it was windy as ****, for sure gonna need some tabs on it - it was about a 20 degree angle when I got into the wind.

Tach doesn't work well so not sure of exact but felt like in the low 3000's was the highest i went.

I had some surges while out so I quickly turned around and headed back in so in all about 5 minutes on plane.

My plan was to get it out, run for a bit and find a cove then install one of the several fuel filters I purchased. Problem was i forgot to buy hose clamps...

thats why i didn't stay out too much - didn't want to kill the thing because of fuel.

Its got a water seperator on it. FOrgot the replacent filter for that too.

So, just pulled back to the dock and let it run there for about an hour while i had a couple beers and my sandwich.

putting it back on the trailer was fun, i think i'll get a couple steps welded to winch post.
