Re: dixie hustler "deck job" (turned full rebuild)

It went better than the first layer, but still not perfect. I'm just gonna continue with my stringers and come back to the transom in a few days when it has a little cure in it and grind it up nice and purdy and remove/ patch a few bubbles. I can get smaller pieces to lay down nicely. I might try doing a transom skin in sections if I ever do it again.

I have to admit that I completely gave up using a roller after my first couple of lay-ups and have done everything since with chip brushes which I've cut half the length of the bristles off.

Maybe with better glassing skills than mine a roller starts to become more useful!

I really like these for glassing ..

Some like the 6" short nap covers but just give them a shot I think you will be surprised. Slow down just a bit and try not to use to much resin . Like Wood said work from the center out and the chips brushes with about a 1/2" cut off works well for working the bubbles out . Take the brush a dab dab dab towards the edges. Ya might keep a few stick pins handy for problem area,s ..:)

I do think perhaps I'm trying to move too quickly. I have a fear of it getting hard on me too soon before I have it rolled out. I also think I'm trying to work bubbles too soon. I did try a little bubble removal with the halved chip brush. It helped some. I cannot imagine trying to resin a whole transom with only a brush! Might try it on a stringer section on a short run.

Would the thumb tacks go through a layer or two of mostly cured glass and/or pb. Or even into old glass? I'm thinking not but I do plan to give them a shot on my next glassing session.

Even the best of glassers get air bubbles from time to time . Once you have worked on a spot as much as you can and ya still have a pocket of air,try the pins before it completely goes off and see if will hold it down until cured . If not you can grind the spot and patch it if needed .
You,ll get the hang of it with some practice ..

It isn't bad by any means. But its not great. I'm gonna grind and clean it up some and fix em up. If it doesn't measure too thick now I may do a little grinding on it and try to apply one more layer, in three sections so I don't have so many contours working against one another.

Crappy picture, but its all I have to show at the moment.

Couple more shots of the transom. I ground a few spots on it today and worked on my stringers some.

Stringers in place and 'glued' down.

I'm gonna attack the stringers in sections. One 'box' at a time. Fillet, tab, layers one and two all at once. Cutting it into these bite size chunks should help it keep from seeming to be overwhelming. I also still have to extend the bulkheads the rest of the way across the boat. I did something wrong when cutting the bulkheads that are there. They are a good inch off the hull. So I guess I'm just gonna have extra pb there.

Good strategy, focus just on the next thing you need to accomplish. Occasionally, allow yourself to think about what all needs to be done, but just to make sure you're not forgetting anything.

Looks like really nice work! Can't wait to see how this boat comes together.

Thanks! I'm pleased so far. I really appreciate all the advice and encouragement from the folks on this forum.without this forum I'd be driving around on my first rotted Dixie witb trex decking boards screwed to the stringers.

Lookin' pretty good!

I'd have made those joint splices a lot longer, but by the time you get everything filled with foam they should be ok.

Lookin' forward to seeing some of your glass layups.

I will keep that in mind for next time! I am already eyeing a small tri-hull sitting on some tires I noticed a month or so ago ;).

I plan to tab these joints before tabbing the stringers to the hull. Will that help? And how much of an overlap for the tab?

I grabbed the keel stringer by accident when I was looking for a scrap of wood to tack the outer stringers to to hold it upright for bedding, and used it to tack to the tops of the stringers :embarassed:. So once the bedding sets up for a couple days I'll untack the keel stringer and put it into place. I haven't even dry fit it yet, so I don't know what to expect from it yet. I used pl for my bedding. I won't be able to touch it again until at least Mon., maybe Tues., and it's been 80 degrees for a week or so now, so it should be dried well.

I have a few spots where the stringer-hull gap is half an inch or so, so I'll bed those spots with pb since it's so thick.

Re: dixie hustler "deck job" (turned full rebuild)

I have read it several times, but I don't recall seeing anything about tabbing a splice to a stringer. I'll check it out again and see if I missed anything. I was told to make this thing a TANK since most of its life will be spent pulling someone on something

Good to hear, because I wasn't pleased haha. The very top above the keyhole was awful, but I cleaned that up today with a dremel and a grinder. That was just so many contours so close together. I haven't checked the thickness or flatness around the keyhole yet.

Re: dixie hustler "deck job" (turned full rebuild)

I bought a gallon of bilgekote to do the bilge area with. I have been wondering if I should gel it instead to help give more waterproofing. But, I know very little about bilgekote. Is it waterproof/resistant?

I got EZ Bilge White, Gallon - Pettit (Kop Coat).

Re: dixie hustler "deck job" (turned full rebuild)

Is BilgeKote, specifically designed to be used ON the bilge, a good product to use on your bilge?

Bilgekote? is a fast drying, durable coating formulated for application to bilge areas. Bilgekote? helps prevent absorption of oil, gasoline or sludge into wood and fiberglass.

  • Hard wearing coating for bilges and bulkheads
  • Chemical resistance to fumes, fuel and oil
  • High opacity for thorough coverage
  • Cleans easily for reduced upkeep

You already have the bilgekote, USE it ;)
