I thought glassing the transom would be easy but it's a pain in the butt to work with mat.
I think I messed it up pretty good.
See what it looks like tomorow.

Dont worry about it.. were not all pros trust me i don't even like using the mat cuz i can't make it look good either.. i say just grind down all those high spots and put another layer on wider than the first one so it grabs more of the transom for strength.

Oh yah and how do you like that harbor freight tool.. ive been thinking about buying it.

Thanks Zack. I grinded it down and then it didn't seem so bad. Was able to get the next couple of build ups look pretty good.
Is your transom exactly 2 inches or is it a a little shy,or is it more?

That is a great tool tho the wood blades could be better. It is great for very detailed cuts.
Thanks for the positive reply.

Guys I have a question that I can't figure out.
When I pulled up the deck their was about an inch gap between the deck and the sides of the hull but it was glassed over and you could not see this because of the glass. Is this normal. I noticed in oop's thread that it looked as if he went all the way to the hull with his deck.
Does it just depend on the boat?

Nice project you have going on! I feel your pain been grinding and replacing stringers and bulks..... I too am doing a first time rebuild/repair... If it wasn't for the great people on iboats I would be lost! Great job on the boat so far! Keep at it!

So you got any new pix of the transom ?
get a small metal roller to use on your finishing touches to the mat
the deck should be to the hull

No time to work on the boat the last couple of days but I did get some parts I ordered and that anode kit I got, has to go back, no bolts in the pack.
They say it might rain the next few days but come on this is AZ.

Almost forgot, I also need to drill those, well... I call them Mickey Mouse ears on the top of the transom.

Any advice on how to drill them.

just something I found while doing some glass work on my project was the difference in resins ,that resin from the home depot does not wet out the glass very well at all and it makes a total mess of the mat . I used the 435 resin from us composites and it was soooo much easier to work with and it goes a lot further , oh and its cheaper :)

Is it cheaper after you pay the shipping?

If you buy it in a five gallon container yes it's cheaper , also when you factor in the acetone that you have to use between coats of the stuff with wax in it to remove the film left behind and a gallon goes much further ,just the quick math I did on one of my orders came to 38 a gallon for the five gallon bucket and that includes shipping. The difference in the two is night and day when working with csm ,it doesn't ball up like it has been doing to ya .

Thanks rick
This is what I got done today. Not as much as I hoped but I feel good about it.
I'm trying to get this done asap, my wife is 7 months pregnet and I really hope to get this out of the way.As much as I'm enjoying the work I need to get her done.

I glassed both sides of the deck in the bilge area and tabbed it in. Still need to finish the rest.
