Re: should pete rose make it into

why have rules if yur gonna bend them?
greatest player? dang close IMO.
but he also owed nearly 1/2 million $ to
an organized crime family in NY for gambling.
baseball just can NOT allow that kind of
outside influence to enter the game.
MY vote is a loud NO!

Re: should pete rose make it into

I can't allow MY to be the thread killer here. :p

I have a great Uncle in the HOF:

CHARLES LEO (GABBY) HARTNETT
C 1922-41 Cubs , Giants
Manager in 1938-40 Cubs

He played ball with the likes of Ruth and Gehrig. I have a picture of Gabby signing an autograph for Al Capone. Back in those days, players did bet on the game. They used to drink whiskey in the dugouts and have to drop their cigar when it was time to bat. Ruth, Gehrig, Cobb and many others are in the HOF. Whether or not the rules today were applied back then is something I can't answer.

All I know is that Rose is a part of baseball history like so many before him. Someone posted here that he should be used as an example of how NOT to get into the HOF if you don't follow the rules. This may be the perfect solution. As long as his records and accomplishments are duly noted, I would be happy.

rules is rules LF... you don't cross the line.
otherwise, what's the point of havin' them?
didn't Pete sign an agreement accepting his
lifetime ban? why do you think he did?
because if he didn't plead giuilty, they would
have invstigated his NY gambling buddies even
further... I don't think they would have liked
the attention much and old Pete would have a
fate much worse than banishment!
add to this, he lied to ALL of us all these years!
and now, he finally comes clean and we should
forgive and forget?
don't think so.
can anyone name any other walk in life where you
could get away with this kinda crud?
just try it with yur boss or a judge sometime.
am sorry, but athlete's are not above the law
even if they believe they are.

They are. He has not been removed from Baseball. In fact, his memorabilia is all over the HOF along with plaques listing his accomplishments. He is just not a member, his bust is not displayed and he can't sign his name HOF. That's all. All his records stand and are part of the official history and records of baseball.

Make no mistake, what Pete really wants is reinstatement so he can work in the game again.

Hey Tylerin, after reading MY's post, I thought about your double homocide comment yesterday. It just came to me, you were talking about OJ, not Ray Lewis. RL only committed a single homocide!

Gaugeguy for some reason I knew exactly what you were thinking ;) Kirby Puckett was accused of only 1 felony sexual assault, Ty Cobb only admitted killing 1 guy......etc. etc. etc.

maybe he confessed Ralph because he is being
pressured to pay his gambling debt and a few
million from a book deal might pay at least
part of the VIG.
don't believe for a moment that his debt has
been forgiven even if he quit gambling long
ago (which we don't know either)

Theres alot of folks from the colored leagues that are not in the Hall of Shame.. I mean Fame.. .ya know I'm glad that this debate accurred because both sides have good points....this arguement has formed my opinion that the HOF is a elite club for those that (white only before Jackie Robinson) may or may not deserve it, ....bottom line?IMO.... Get rid of the Babe and others who did not live up to todays HOF standards and add all who would belong to the HOF from the colored ranks. And keep Pete out and it will be as pure as the driven snow. :D

Otherwise its just a country club that doesnt have to let anyone it doesnt like in. :(

Honestly, I am not a seam head. The real issue for me is about personal responsibility, integrity and accountability. How do I explain to my son that all he really has to worry about is being a star and the rules won't apply to him?

Baseball and sports in general, are used to teach the youth of America the virtues of competition, sportsmanship, integrity and fair play. When you undermine those concepts for a clear rule breaker kids get the wrong message. That is truly what concerns me.

Maybe when you and I were kids Ralph, but now, it's see how much money you can get for 5 years.

Come on, who's worth 20Mil for 5 years? No one.
It's that way in any sport now, and if the players don't like something, let's walk out untill we get that big paycheck.

Hey don't get me wrong, what he did was/is wrong.
I grew up here in the big red machine area and went to watch many a game with him and JB and TP and JM.
All great players.
If his stuff is in Coopertown now, leave it that way so people can see what he did as a player.

Re: should pete rose make it into

great player. but no hall because of the gambling.

the drug addict, the murderer, all bad people. but what they did wrong did not affect the game. might be bad people off the field, but again, did not affect the game.

rose bet on baseball while he was a coach. one thing we depend on when we go to watch a game is that the outcome is not fixed. we may be watching drug addicts, wife beaters, and murderers, but atleast they are all playing to win. that's the most important thing. with rose and his gambling, he took away the most precious part of the game. you never know if the games you watched were fixed or not.

Yea he bet on baseball and that was wrong, but maybe, just maybe he was betting on his team's ability to win.

What about people like Sammy Sosa, he used a corked bat, affects the integrity of the game, he'll be going to the hall. Mark Mcguire and Barry Bonds are both steroid freaks. Their performance enhancing drugs affect the integrity of the game, they too will be going to the hall.

Re: should pete rose make it into

Even betting to win affects the outcome. Example, lets say he bet today's game and in order to win, does something that affects the ability to win tomorrow, like using a pitcher he really needs in the next day's game. So he does not bet tomorrow because he has affected his ability to win on that day.

Bottom line: you manage differently when you have money on the game either way.
