Just acquired a 170 Horizon. Assembly required.

Buddy of mine with the 3.0 had carb problems he was struggling with. I rebuilt the carb for him and it ran fine. At idle the exhaust would be extremely rich and it had a tough time starting. Since the carb was an older mercarb on a newer motor, he took it to the marina he bought the motor from...

    Finishing before gelcoat

Can you back the camera up some. Not sure what I’m looking at there. You need to stabilize the crack with layers of glass. PB over a crack is not a good idea IMO.

    Finishing before gelcoat

Curious if you replaced all the wood when you went into this restoration. I can’t see how water could be coming through the hull. If it came in the top side, then all the wood and foam is again wet and the hull is holding water. Something does not seem right here.

    Finishing before gelcoat

Can’t tell from the picture. I’d want to see if it was more than just a drip. It could be a blister. I would be inclined to grind it out a little and poke around to see how deep it goes.

    Trim / Tilt

I would post your question in the Johnson Outboard section of the forum for more traffic.

    Trim / Tilt

On the Johnson I had trim was accomplished through two very small cylinders that extend or retract under any condition. When those small cylinders were maxed, the pump had enough pressure to fill the larger tilt cylinder. The pressure was not enough to push up the piston in the tilt cylinder...

    Trim / Tilt

With what I experienced with the 85, I don’t think you’ll have any trouble with the 40. The motors are very well balanced. I just hated having to move the latch pin around for best conditions. Power trim is so much better. As I was looking for power trim options for mine I found that a lot of...

    Polyester resin peanut butter

As Scott said, it will fully cure. It does remain a little tacky for some time but honestly that’s a benefit when your doing multiple layups. Tacky does not mean it’s not cured, it just won’t have a smooth satin like feel for a bit. Only use surfacing wax when making faring compounds or in the...

    Trim / Tilt

My first boat had a 78 Johnson 85hp with manual tilt. There was a shock of some sort mounted to it where the tilt cylinder would be on a trim tilt unit. Honestly for the size of that V4 it lifted quite nicely. I attribute that to how balanced it was between the power head and leg, not that...

Rehab SportCraft 222 1983 deep V hull cuddy walkaround

Wish I could help you. Both of my Johnson’s came with the side mount control. Possibly look around for a center console salvage?

Where to pass the fuel filling hose and vent fuel hose?

Having a dip in the fill tube where fuel can sit acts as a trap in plumbing. Will you be able to fill the tank? Yes. Will it be a pain in the ass? Yes. The dip will cause the auto shut off on a fuel nozzle to trip off at high flow as fuel and vapors back up the fill tube. You’ll still be able to...

    87 medalist

I don’t like that method because it’s a difficult process to get everything glassed back up and gelcoated so it looks like factory. If not laid up properly, you’ll have a weak transom. The transom isn’t the only thing rotted and can be replaced when everything else is gutted. It’ll be a lot...

    1993 Wellcraft Eclipse196S Rebuild

Best thing to do IMO is to decap the boat. The integrated bow section is part of the cap. Once it’s out of the way, you’ll have full access to everything.

    Freewheel on alternator

Welcome to the forum. The idler pulley is not necessary because there aren’t as many belt driven accessories to to power from the belt(s). The idlers help ensure there is enough degrees of belt wrap around each pulley to properly drive that accessory.

    Main engine for trolling

No, it won’t hurt it as long as you completed the proper break in procedure. Just make sure you blow the carbon out of it every now and then. Go fish, enjoy your boat.

Mine is a 1990 4.3LX. Still runs great. You get out of it what you put into it. Basic law of common sense.
