Big Twin is manual shift. Electric shift is Lark. Any 80-90 wt outboard gear oil is ok for Big Twin.

    Johnson Super Sea-Horse 40 Electramatic

RD models are manual shift, RK models are electric shift. So, obviously, anything related to the shift in any way differ between the two.

My list says that is a 1966 motor. Not much different than a 1968 anyway. Yeah, a group 24-size marine battery will be fine.

Well yes and no. You will find some differences in things like the electric choke, and wiring etc.

    1963 johnson 40 hp electric

Looks like somebody has hacksawed a screwdriver slot in the end of the needle to adjust it. I think I could continue to adjust it that way for less than 70 bucks.

Tuck those coil ground wires back so they don't rub on the flywheel hub. Polish the crankshaft taper and flywheel taper shiny bright. Install flywheel with tapers dry. Use a torque wrench to tighten the nut to 100-105 ft/lbs

    Too much smoke

Get it out of that tub and on a boat on the lake where it was designed to run, and run the p--- out of it. You may find it will be much cleaner.

    Evinrude 35520 exhaust seal

Nope, seepage there can be considered normal, at least in the sense that there is nothing to prevent it.

    How long fuel line

Heck,, you could run it much longer. Longer than any boat you would power with a 20hp.

1972 johnson 25 hp seahorse shift problems

Does "pops into neutral" mean the shifter actually pops back to neutral position? If it does, your clutch dog likely is badly worn out,

    Gasket Sealant

You don't need any for that particular application.

    33 hp Johnson no spark

Use that Fluke to measure the resistance across the points. should be zero Ohms when closed---not an Ohm or two---zero. And infinity when open. These assume the coil and condenser are disconnected from the points.

    Need help with tachometer

This one should work, less than 80 bucks, brand new. Why go elsewhere? Disclaimer: I have no financial interest in i-boats. Verify fitment before purchasing. https://ww2.iboats.com/SeaStar-Black-Sterling-Signature-Series/dm/cart_id.737545197--session_id.873875322--view_id.392047

    Need help with tachometer

NO. That tach is for motors that have breaker points and it counts the times the points open per rev. Your motor has no points and a tach for it counts the alternator pulses instead. BTW, the e-bay tach you found is kind of a rare find.

    JW-10 will start, then die.

    1. Has the flywheel been removed lately? Was it properly re-installed (dry tapers and nut torqued to 30 foot lbs) ? If not,, it may have sheared the flywheel key. 2. How do those coils look? Your symptoms strongly suggest old, cracked coils.
