    2005 Mercury 90hp 4 Stroke

No doubt they have their fans. Suppose my Thinking is just around the silly issues, design and just the bloody weight of the early ones. As for the idea of timing cam belts on a marine engine, especially an outboard…recipe for disaster to the unaware boater perhaps. But as much as I hate to...

    Duo prop seal replacement

Hi. Worth being aware that these are famous for taking water into the gear oil, through the oil drain plug. Literally so common to happen on these. Easy to nip the seal when tightening the screw back up again. Terrible design. I and a dozen others I know of at least, had such issues. Common...

    Mariner 60hp motor identify help

Just saw it’s suggesting as an 89’. That will be spot on for age. You’ll likely be aware of these mariner being common place over here in Europe racerone. You’ve got it spot on about it being a mercury power head. That will be original as it is. Literally identical to a late 80’s merc 60...

    Mariner 60hp motor identify help

Just at the risk of boring you a little. Here in Europe, the mariner brand sustained itself a little different from the US market. Some mariners of a certain size and certain age, were actually Yamaha engines. Like all their small engines. The 2/4/5/6/8/9.9/15/20 etc were all Yamaha engines...

    Mariner 60hp motor identify help

Hi there. Not sure if you’re aware by now, but these are just mercury engines. Identical to a 60hp mercury of same age. Very familiar with these things here in the U.K. I’d be almost certain it will be from around ‘87/88-91/92ishish in year. If I was asked to bet on it. I’d say 1987ish. Give or...

    2005 Mercury 90hp 4 Stroke

Might not help you too much…and likely controversial…but unless your local boating area insists on a 4 stroke…I’d much rather have a 2 stroke over that age and technology of 4 stroke. I’ll sorely admit that the most recent of 4 strokes are just amazing things. Came on light years just in the...

    Prop ?

Understandable. Being a pontoon (something I know nothing about) and perhaps needing very small pitched props, you may be limited. Is it the CT model you have, just to be sure ? You should look into what props are available to you, if she is. Having tried a good few on my CT now. There is 100%...

    My boat in saltwater

I get you Jim. I do think that looking after engines like these when in the salt, can make them last. Changing manifolds every few years and especially avoiding leaving them open to oxidising when possible makes a difference. But all that aside…I definitely know that some boats just don’t do...

    Prop ?

Excellent. These are amazing engines. I’ve one on a cuddy. Way more powerful than 115hp for sure. All I’d perhaps say, is that after lots and lots of prop testing on my CT 115…I find these engines are at their very best if they can run close to 5900/6000 rpm flat out. Anything less than 5800...

    Fisher sv-19 gt w/ 150EFI prop pitch?

Hi. Is this new motor an efi 4 stroke 150 ? If it is, just a word of caution around the thinking behind you saying 150 is the max rated for the boat. Often guys that have a boat from a certain era where the maker had a 2 stroke engine in mind, when stating max hp. The newest of mercs have come a...

    Intermittent four beeps engine sputter

Check your water separating filter. I have a 2016 115 merc. It has a pre filter like this inside the boat. There is an alarm for water detection on the water trap bowl on the bottom of the filter. It’s connected to the smart craft and will alarm if it detects water there. You can and should...

    My boat in saltwater

These engines have been successfully running in salt water for nearly 4 decades now. As long as you change the consumable parts like manifolds and risers every 4/5 years…nothing to worry about. I’d worry more about what the salt does to the rest of the boat. As said…flush when you can after use...

Overheat on 5.0 with SX outdrive

Unless the head has lost the compression and allowing the water to be forced out the cylinder. Just my thoughts
  14. Q

Overheat on 5.0 with SX outdrive

It likely wouldn’t crank if there was water taken into it, I’d think. If you’ve found water in it for reasons other than coming back up through the exhausts…and given what you’ve said about overheating…my money would be on the cylinder heads being warped or best case, gaskets gone…hence the loss...

Mercruiser 6.2l 300 (2018) fuel oil mixture prior to winterization?

All depends on if you can or not…but all I do is let the tank run as empty as I dare on the last sail of the season with this in mind (using the smart craft data on fuel) and I have about 10l of premixed fuel and oil ready to pour in for the way back to the slipway to take the boat out the...

Mercruiser 6.2l 300 (2018) fuel oil mixture prior to winterization?

I only do about roughly between 30-50 to 1. Manual says much more. That’s for the older GM mpi though. Plugs are too bloody expensive to mess up beyond recovery I think

volvo penta d3 160 no start

Does it start of you press the neutral switch that allows you to Rev the engine in neutral (under normal circumstances). Usually a button you can press on or near the evc panel that allows this. There are at least one or two main fuses for these too, from memory

    Mercruiser 5.7 Horizon Draining Issues

I’d suspect you might want to make sure the sea cocks don’t have the quote common issue of being seized, with the internal valve spindle sheared. So you think they are closed by moving the handle a quarter turn…but it’s only the handle that’s moving. Worth checking, if you can. Could perhaps...

1975 23 foot fiberglass with cuddy

Get the timing sorted and take it from there. Once that’s sorted, tell us what outdrive she is abs her ratio of you know. But as she is…you’re about 2000 rpm low at least.
