Do you guys think that 2 gallons and 1 pint of resin will be enough to do the keel and that hole? I hope so or im gonna have to go order more.....
Personally, I'd try and fabricate some wood to fill the keel partially at the very least and NOT fill it totally with PB. If you do that then 2 gals should be plenty. How much CSM and 1708 do you have?

Well, lets see. I purchased 15yds of CSM and 10yds of 1708..... lol, a ridiculous amount. I was thinking doing it like Jon sob did, put a piece of wood in there and glue it with gorrilla glue because of the expanding properties of it. WOG, do you think i should grind the glass of the keel all the way down to be flush with the interior glass?

Sorry that I haven't been on very much but life is dragging me away from my iboats time. I have been checking in on your thread and you're doing a great job. On the keel ..... don't forget that your main stringer is secured by the bolts that go thru your keel. I made sure that I had a good solid piece of fir to bolt thru. I think the fir cost me a couple of dollars at the local lumber yard.

This ^^^ is how you should do it!!!! Notice how he ground down the side walls. This makes it easier to lay the new glass and form the PB fillets.

Oh okay, that looks good. Thanks for the pic Jon sob this is very helpful! I will grind the glass flush to the hull then clean up the exterior of the interior skin(the glass the wood sits against) and fixa few cracks. The holes around where the bolts go through are opened way too much, like an inch hole, I t musta got delaminated and ripped through when the stringer came out. Now, my question to you, Jon sob, How did you mount the bolts so they would not move about when you tightened the nut? Also, I should be using flat countersunk stainless?

I used stainless steel carriage bolts. I put the fir in place and marked where the holes were in the keel. I drilled the holes in the fir for the bolts then used a drill bit just big enough for the head of the bolt to be countersunk. I bolted the fir to the stringer to be sure all of the holes lined up. I added Gorilla glue to the underside of the bolt heads to keep them from turning when I bolted the stringer in place.I took the stringer off and put short pieces of tubing over the bolts so I didn't get glue or PB on the threads. I Gorilla glued the fir in place on the keel. I had to use straps to hold the fir tight while the glue dried.

When i get the keel all done and the boat all painted, i was wondering if there is some sort of Guard or armor i could put over the keel so that i could beach the boat on occasions without damage. I have an aluminum plate that was used as a "Bandaid" for the original transom. I was thinking about heating it up and forming it to the keel and Then JB welding it on. This is just a thought because theres times i'd like to beach the boat for camping and stuff.

not at all

In fact the video will make the guard make more sense. $125-180 for a plastic 3-6" wide strip down the hull... WTH?? Right? Sounds like a lot for not much, but it certainly is well worth it if you're likely beaching the boat. The video helps w all that so, great to have.. BTW I downloaded & saved it, even though I'm not likely to have any boat anywhere near a beaching scenario any time soon. Even if I could splash 1 tomorrow  Which isn't remotely possible...

I tossed the idea of a keel guard around but I have no intention of beaching mine either. Tomorrow may not be possible but you'll be in before you know it. I remember thinking that I would never get done.

Alright, well thats something to think about once i can actually use the boat, lol. I can't wait to get this boat in the water, the feeling of using it the first time is going to be amazing after all the work i've put into it. This boat was so rough when i got it, it might as well been a big litter box, lol. I'm going to be getting the keel wood today, i figured i'll get a 2x4 and then rip it with a circular saw, that way if i screw it up i'll have a second chance with the other side of the 2x4. I didnt really take any measurements of the original height so i'm kinda just eyeballing it (Its not really an exact science) It pretty much just needs to be a smooth transition with the bow of the keel, Thats where those drywalling skills come into place.... haha. For this year, just so i can get in the water before winter, i'd like to just get the structural work and paint job done, then do the other stuff next year, i'm dieing to use the boat!

I went to a local lumber yard and they ripped a piece of fir for me and even cut the corners and charged me under three dollars for the whole thing. I had to shape the bow end and thin out the stern end but it fit pretty good.

Thanks Jon Sob, i needed this info. I just called a local lumber MILL and they told me they couldn't rip a piece of wood to those specifications because they dont even have a MILL! so basicly all they are is a distributor. Looks llike i'm going to have to rip a 2x4 or 3 with a circular saw...... Thanks for the dimensions. Do u know what size SS Bolts you used to hold the main stringer to the keel Jon sob?

I used 1/4" x 2" stainless steel carriage bolts. Make sure that you dry fit the fir to your stringer before you glue it in to be sure that the holes all match.

Okay, thanks for the SS bolt info. Today i went to home depot and picked up a 1 1/2 x 3/4 x 12 piece of maple! Its going to be a perfect keel, its very strong. I got more problem with my truck, so i'm going to have to fix that, but once i'm done i'll get right down to shaping the wood and installing it. The bow end of the keel area looks like its sustained pretty bad damage in the past. The surface which the Bow end of the keel lays against was delaminating and had bondo and stuff on it. I couldnt help but grind all that bad stuff off. So now i have to figure out a way to bring it back to the height of where the keel is. I'm thinking about laying down some csm and then peanut butter under that part of the keel. I'll post some pictures tomorrow, maybe WOG can chime in and give me some pointers. Its pretty bad.....

Add some PB to build it up some, but leave enough room for at least a couple layers of CSM...If you want you can do 1 layer of CSM, a layer of 1708, then another layer of CSM...sand and fair...good to go...
