Usually, using a 3/8" notched trowel and applying the PB to both Transom and Outer skin, a qt will do approx. 5 sq. ft. on each. So a Transom thats say, 60" x 36" would need about 3 qts of PB. Maybe 4 at the most.

Re: 1960's 13' MFG carefree Rebuild (complete noob, i know nothing about this!)

I PB'd the Transom in today and totally screwed it up! I only used a Pint of PB which wasnt enough. I had such a curve to the transom yet it just wasnt meeting up flush at the very bottom, so it had a big air pocket. I was forced to pull the whole thing off:mad: So a waste of Materials and time..... I cut down the transom to the original size, the same as what Jon sobs is, so now i gotta glass those edges. I think it will fit in better now. This time i'm going to go overkill on the PB, i'm gonna put like over a quart on it. Slather so much that it squeezes out of every part!!!!!! Too bad i didnt have a video of my emotional angry breakdown, you guys would have gotten a good kick out of it, haha. I was able to scrape most the pb off, so it shouldnt be too much sanding. I tell you what, after all this i'm going to be VERY well educated when it comes to buying another boat, i'm gonna be able to negotiate like a pro knowing how much Time, money and headache can go into it. I'll get pics posted tomorrow, promise;)

I went back and looked at the size of your transom. I'd guess you will need about 1-2 quarts of PB. You should be using a 3/8" notched trowel to apply it to both the transom and the skin. Better to use to much than not enough.

Are you going to drill some holes into the plywood so the pb can ooze out and create a better bond ?

Heres what the transom looks like, i've since cut it down to the original size, it didnt fit very well as a long piece. It fits much better short.

I DID IT!!! I got the transom in with 2 quarts of PB, i'm so happy with it, its solid and feels perfect! Heres a bunch of pictures of how it looks. When i tap on the outside with my knuckles it feels so solid, i can't believe it. Yesterday i was to the point of frustruation where i just wanted to kick the transom in and throw it off a cliff...... Now its all well and strong:D

I gotta go get more Cabosil and chopped strand, i used it all up:( My PB was more like the consistency of mayonaise, but it seemed to work well

The transom looks like it came out great...

I have a question, what are you going to do to "tie in" the transom to the sides of the hull?

It looks like ya got a good bond to the skin. I thought you glued the ply pieces in place to make the curve so as to run all the way to the sides? When you pulled the transom after the glue did it retain the curved shape? maybe you can fill the rest in with ply before you glass it in. Just a thought..

Using a slow android phone to type this, total accident..It had a curve that was very close, but not perfect. It just wouldn't meet up flush at the bottom, I snapped several clamps trying to force it to that shape.... It just wouldn't. So I just cut it 1/2 inch larger then original manufacurer specifications. If that's how it was designed, I see no problem doing it the same way. That's how Jon sob did it. I'm going to filet the sides and then tab it in with alternating layers of csm and 1708, each piece 2 inches longer then the last. And then 2 pieces of 1708 over the entire thing. THE END CAPS WILL GIVE IT A LOT OF STRENGTH WHEN I PUT THEM BACK IN AND GLASS THEM TO THE TRANSOM the steel stringers and floor should strengthen it a lot too. Sorry about the caps lock, im

Hey guys, I got the transom all sanded and filet around the edges, tabbed it in and put a piece of 1708 over the whole thing, check it out.

My fillet got filled with a bunch of red bugs! I reached for a piece of foam board insulation to cover the job from the sun, and then all these red bugs fell into it.... Lol, i guess they will be there forever, someone will find them in the future and have a good laugh.

darn red bugs, they are all over my boat, a tree above my boat is covered in them. pain in the butt

So there you go, its coming right along. The transom feels really strong as it is, i'm not sure if i'm going to put another layer of 1708 over the thing or not, i might just put a layer of csm over it, not sure.

Fillet looks good! And think Jurassic Park but w/ poly resin for the bugs ;) At least there is @ 992 fewer red bugs in the yard, and besides they sand easy :)

Hahaah, yeah like 100 years from now that filet will be found as an ancient artifact with red bugs in it.... I swear to god, those bugs are like attracted to fiberglass. They crawl all over the freshly layed glass with all those fumes and dont seem to be bothered at all:eek: So Tomorrow i'm going to put a second layer of 1708 on. I filet both sides of the first rib, so i'll be able to glass over it. How far should it overlap on the outside of the transom?

Do you mean up & over the top lip of the new wood transom, out & down on to the exterior finerglass skin of the transom?

You don't need to do that. Just overlap on to both sides of the hull & out onto the hull bottom.

Yeah thats what i mean, I was just thinking of doing it for sake of making it even more water tight. Basicly the top of the transom has only one layer of csm on it, seems there should be more glass. I supposed i could just put more csm on it, which would give me a smoother finish then the 1708
