. It looks loike its been repaired from the inside. This is basicly what it looked like under all that weird blackish blueish stuff. My brother thinks the compound was a floor leveling compound.

Re: 1960's 13' MFG carefree Rebuild (complete noob, i know nothing about this!)

Hey Guys, i'm wondering if i've been repairing holes properly. What i do is i take a dremel tool and round off the inside of the hole. Then i wipe down with acetone. Then i take one of my grandmas plastic placematts and cut it to larger then the hole. I then tape wax paper to the placematt and hot glue it to the inside of the boat and put duct tape over that. After all this i make up some peanutbutter with more Chopped strand then Cabosil and fill in the hole. When that cures i sand it a little below the surface and then bring the thickness back up with CSM. Is this essentially how its done? I did this today with a hole that was like 2x4" and it seems really strong, i'll reinforce it from the inside as well.

On the inside you should ad a layer of 1708 as well and you're golden!!!

Thanks Woodonglass, its nice to know i'm doing this properly. A real relief. It seems with fiberglass theres a million different ways to do the same thing

A picture is worth a thousand words.... As you can see, i'm moving right along. Tomorrow i will do some sanding of the fillets and then begin laying fiberglass. Can the fiberglass be laid in seperate pieces? What i mean, is does the piece have to be 13 feet long, or can it be in say 3 foot sections(Or however wide the roll of fiberglass happens to be). I'd rather not have to cut down the width of my fiberglass rolls. It would also be nice to do smaller pieces so i dont have to Rush against the clock, i hate rushing and then it starts kicking off and i start spitting out 4 letter words, ahah. My keel is made of maple, its really really strong. I still need to drill the holes for the bolts, i figure i'll drill them from beneath the boat while laying on my back(I'm young). WOG, what fiberglass laying pattern would you suggest for this keel? Thanks alot guys, i really apprechiate everyones advice and help. Its great! Enjoy the pics:D

Re: 1960's 13' MFG carefree Rebuild (complete noob, i know nothing about this!)

I would have been at this point weeks ago if it wasnt for that mechanic who wouldnt fix my truck. I broke down in the middle of nowhere and was towed to a local mechanic. The mechanic was confident in his ability and said it would be a few days my truck would be done. I waited 8 days! And he didnt even begin working on the project. I got my truck towed out of there to my granparents and i did the job, that guy took 8 days from me, bastard. It was my thermostat housing that needed to be replaced. When i removed the part one of the bolts broke off into the engine block, it was a really tight spot, so i drilled it out with a right angle dremel tool. Once drilled out i tried tapping it, and then the hardened steel tap broke off! I asked several mechanics and machinists and they told me i was pretty much screwed..... I grinded it out with sanding cone on the dremel tool, and that actually worked, it took like 3 hours though..... All that is what led to me not getting this stuff done as fast as i should have. Thanks for listening to my rant, haha

Whether or not it is approved Iboats etiquette to rant, I personally believe and appreciate that it is a very important part of this crazy thing we do that involves restoring our boats...;)...it allows us a place to record our frustrations along with our accomplishments...

Carry On...:D

Nice job on the Keel! Finish her off with a layer of 1.5 oz CSM extended 3" out onto either side of the keel. Add a layer of 1708 on top of that. Finish her off with a final layer of CSM. DONE!!!!;)

Thank you very much WoodonGlass, I will take your advice and do it exactly as you say. I'll give it a good sanding and then begin the glassing. Can the glass be done in pieces the width of the roll so that i don''t have to cut a long piece off my roll? I'm going to get on my back and drill the holes from the inside, then install the bolts. Theres two holes that were repaired because they got ripped too large, i'll have to flip the boat over, line up the stringer and make a mark wtih a pencil or something. Then flip it over again and drill those holes. It'll be done. I'm tryin to get this done DOUBLE TIME, so that i can get out on the water at least one day, even if that day is fridgid cold. Maybe i can get it done in like 2 weeks if i really really haul ***, hopefully.

The keel looks really good.
Before you start doing any glass work the gel coat should be removed. You only need to remove about 4" to 5" out on each side of the keel. Fiber glass needs to bond to fiber glass. When you sand down the fillets try to get them as close as you can to a finnished look.
It will make it much easier when you put the fiber glass down and start sanding it.

It is always better to use continuous layer of glass and do a wet on wet layers. This is the strongest way.
You can however use the width of the roll and over lap the ends by at least 2" and when you lay the 1708 stagger the seams from the csm. If you use a 6" roller and a bubble buster you should be able to do this layup all at one time. Just mix up small amounts of resin at a time. About a quart at a time should work fine and as long as the resin is still tacky you can lay 1 layer after another.

Sphels has a very good point......
Keep up the good work.

Thanks Decker83, This helps put me on the right track. I'll take your recommendations. I'll pre cut a bunch of pieces and then start glassin away, yay!

This might be a dumb question, but should i roll resin out on the boat first, then lay the glass over that? or can i just lay the resin over the glass?

I like to roll a real thin layer of resin first. Some do some don't. Totally up to you.

I saw a youtube video where a guy used spray adhesive, pretty neat. I guess that would be handy for vertical glassin and upside down glassing

I am concerned about the bolts that go thru the keel and attach to your stringer. How are you going to do this if you glass in the keel? Are you going to use wood screws right into the keel from the inside? How are you going to attach the bolts to the keel from the inside?

I installed the bolts before doing the glassing. But, i havent done the glassing yet, so i've just installed the bolts, lol. Tomorrow i'll sand and do the glassing. How did you attach the other stringers, did you use some sort of epoxy or glue? I was thinking using gorilla glue or JB Weld, i duno tho
