No paint required. What do you mean about attaching the stringers? Have you checked the first link in my signature? But wait, I thought the stringers in this boat and Jons were Metal?? Or am I mistaken??

Yes they are metal, but the port and starboard stringer, how do they attach? There were no fasteners holding them in, i bet JB weld would hold em pretty good, but it would be horrible for the next person rebuilding the boat 50 years from now.... How did Mr.Jon Sob attach those stringers?

I believe your lateral ribs are also metal soooo, it should be possible to use small self tapping screws to screw the stringers to the ribs. That would be my suggestion. You might PM Jon and see what he did, cuz I can't remember.

I think Jon sob had flat aluminum stock that attached to the central stringer and went out to the port and starboard stringer. Mine didnt come with this piece of flat stock.... Do you think it would be okay to JB weld the stringers to the ribs? Or use some sort of epoxy?

Port and Starboard stringers did not attach to the hull but to the main stringer with flat bar and to the transom. The lateral ribs are fiberglass.

Ace, HD & Lowes all carry thin aluminum stock. It looks like that 'strap' is a place holder to keep the front edge of the outside stringers oriented correctly until you install the deck. Not really a structural element. Is that correct? Doesn't look like they have any evidence of an attachment point in Jon's pix...

Yep this ^^^ is correct. I'd get the flat stock and rivet it in place and call it good. I suppose, you could try and fabricate some small straps to attempt to rivet into the ribs some way but prolly not needed. the ribs in this boat take care of the Strucutural integrity of this small boat.

When the two smaller stringers are bolted to the transom they are very secure. jb is correct the flat bar is not structural. Here is what they looked like when I installed them back into the boat. I added the bilge box otherwise all three would have gone to the transom.

I dont understand why your port and starboard stringers are so small, mine are almost the same length as the center stringer.... I think ye been cheated! Someone definitely cut those shorter, weird, it must have been close to christmas at the MFG fiberglass company when yours was made. How do u attach ur floor to them if they are so short? I'll go to the hardware store and pick up a piece of aluminum stock for the stringers.

The stringers appear to be from the factory and didn't seem to be cut. This boat was original when I bought her and had no previous work done on her as per the PO ....... except for a few patches.

Re: 1960's 13' MFG carefree Rebuild (complete noob, i know nothing about this!)

Hey you guys, it's been a few weeks. Yesterday the rain stopped and i was able to put 3 layers of CSM over the keel, i have one piece left to go. I'm going to do that tomorrow. I'll get some pictures up tomorrow, i think it looks pretty good. Does anyone know where i can find a carburetor kit for a 1963 evinrude speeditwin 28hp? I need to get that thing running before winter time, so that i can properly winterize it. Anyone know how i can figure out the parts number? I think Napa will be able to order the part if i have the part number.

Hey Iboaters, it's been a while since i posted any pictures of my progress. I finally got the keel all covered, i put 4 pieces of 1.5oz csm and it looks pretty good. Heres the pics,

I'm pretty happy with it, theres a few air bubbles here and there caused from pine needles falling into it, but its not too bad. Should the 4 pieces of CSM be enough coverage? Thanks for looking

I would have preferred 1 layer of CSM, then a layer of 1708 Biax followed by 2 more layers of CSM but... what you have done is a whole lot better than it was. I'd recommend you grind out any air pockets and fill them with PB. Did you put wax in the last batch of resin? It helps with waterproofing for the "Below the Waterline" repairs. Feather the edges and fair it all in and you'll be the only one that knows it's been done. Nice Work!!!!

Thanks Woodonglass, its a real kick of motivation when i get your feedback. I dont have any wax to put over my last layer, do i reallly need it? Can i use butchers wax? I can't think of any place around here that sells the right kind of wax. I got some more shaping of the bow end to do, its pretty bad looking, i just got the last hole filled in with PB. Once its dry i'll sand it and Csm the outside and 1708 the inside.

That hole was tricky, it was in such a tight curved area, a plastic placemat with wax paper taped to it wouldnt quite fit the shape. So what i did was cover a piece of wax paper in duct tape, and then cut the duct tape wax paper to the size i needed and hot glue it in place. Flexed to the shape perfectly

Nice work, and extremely creative to duct tape the waxed paper ;)

I couldn't find some place to drop this until your post popped up today, seems like a perfect place, BGmfg:

What kind of resin did you use? Where did you get it? You add the wax to the resin when you mix it not afterwards. Very nice on the hole repair. Make SURE and add a layer of 1708 to the outside as well. Don't want to take any chances that the hole can be compromised.

Re: 1960's 13' MFG carefree Rebuild (complete noob, i know nothing about this!)

I use Isothalic 404 Polyester tooling resin from UScomposites.com, just like you said to use. so if i dont use wax, how long will it take to cure to the point of being paintable? I know thats a while from now, and i have alot of prep work to do, but i'm just wondering. I was watching a show on discovery channel called American hot rod, and they were restoring a fiberglass corvette. The body work guys used these long sanding boards, what are those called? It was like 2 feet long and you clamp sandpaper to it. I'd like to use something like that so that my sanding job will be a consistent level across, as to make the high spots level with the rest of the boat. Thanks for your support guys

Oh btw WOG, i have one gallon of resin left and its called 435 Standard Polyester Layup Resin. I got it because it was cheaper then the 404, i can use this the same way, right?
