Re: 1960's 13' MFG carefree Rebuild (complete noob, i know nothing about this!)

Okay, so after a week of having to do drywall i'm back on the boat project. The transom is all coated in resin which has sat for a week, what will i have to do to lay fiberglass over that? I remember someone stating that it had to have been glassed within 2 days of coating the wood. Mine has sat for a week with resin on it. Can i sand it and then lay another coat of resin downa nd then glass it? I hope this wont be a problem. I wanna get out and finish glassing the transom, but i'm not sure if i have to grind the resin back down to raw wood to do so. One side has been fully glassed, i just need to do the edges and the other side.

Rough & scuff w/ 80grit +/- the side that's coated, acetone @rag wipe down, air dry. Then roll out resin, let it tack off, apply 2nd layer of resin, apply csm & fully wet it out. side 1 done. Flip transom when it tacks off, do the other side & edges... Side 2 & edges done...

Yep, just one week. Thats plenty of drywall for me! I just purchased a mobile home and i'm renting it outto my brother, he was getting sick of the disgustingness of an old trailer. While gutting it i found plenty of rotten flooring as well..... So alright, i'll sand and rough up the transom with 80 grit and then roll out some resin, got it! Hopefully it isnt raining tomorrow. I spend a week working and it beautiful weather, now that its time to work on my boat its supposed to be raining and high humidity:facepalm: As for the edges, i should just take torn pieces of csm and dab them to the edge of the large flat surface, then when tacky fold over the edges over the edge and then dab more resin? I think i got this, hopefully the weather doesnt suck.

Sounds good to me.

You will end up w/ scrap pieces of CSM during all of this glassing work. Save them! You can cut it up w/ scissors to make extra chopped strand to make PB ;)

If the folding over the edge doesn't work, a quick wipe w/ a knife sandpaper & or grinder will knock the carp off the edge & just dab & lay on some torn scrap, dab & lay and repeat all along the edge...

I think Wood also keeps some push pins handy when an edge wont stay down. Pull it down then stick a pin in until it sets.;)

By carp you mean the fiberglass fibers that are overhanging the edge?

Oh how i wish i had family that were into boat building, and had a climate controlled workshop. Looks like scattered thunderstorms for the next 2 days. With my boat being so small, I might be able to find a window of opportunity to get things done. If the humidity is 60 percent is there no point in glassing? Will it just take longer to cure? Its always humid here and or raining, hard to find the right day. I'll have to go cut down a bunch of trees on my grandparents property and build a workshop out of whatever i can find, all refugee style:D

Yep, hardened CSM that got resin on it, and resin gobs too

The feathery torn edges of the CSM sand easy....

Just applied the other piece of csm to the opposite side. Thought i didnt go over with the resin, but i accidentally did. So when trying to fold the csm over the edges it just kept popping up and creating air bubbles:mad: So i'm just gonna wait till it dries and then take my sanding disk and grind the glass flush to the edge, then put scrap pieces of csm going all the way up the edge until totally covered. Damn this is a headache. Whats your guys secret? how do you go around these 90 degree corners? So hard for me to do. But alas, there is always a solution to a total screw up.

Never try to go over a 90?...always round over the edges of the wood...and be sure to tear, instead of cut the CSM...you can also "loosen" it up a bit where it has to go around the edges by lightly tugging on it...still not perfect, but works better...another tip...wait till the glass/resin just starts to "gel"...and cut off the excess with a SHARP razor knife...

Crap.... So your telling me i should have rounded off the ends? How much do they need to be rounded off? Looks like i gotta go sand the hell out of those edges

It doesn't have to be a lot, usually a 1/4" round over bit in a router...or just ease the edges over the best you can with the grinder or a sander...you may have to fight with the already installed stuff a bit, but you can also add a PB layer over the stuff you can't get at and create a rounded over area, then add some torn CSM...

Thanks for the advice. I whipped out my random orbital sander with 60 grit paper and sanded away at it till the edges were all rounded off(My hand is still shaking...lol). Worked really well. Then i cleaned with acetone and put a layer of resin down. Once tacky, i put pieces of torn csm along the whole edge and dabbed them in with a cut down chip brush until transparent. Looks really good and made hardly any air bubbles:D Very satisfied with it. Tomorrow i'll finish touch it up and then install it into the boat! I just gotta figure out how much PB to make for glueing it in

You don't have to completely round the edges but knocking them down some helps. i'm thinking the edges will be all covered and filleted with pb so I wouldn't worry to much about them. But then again it may make it bond better ...

Btw as the saying goes , it didn't happen unless ya got pics!:D

I'll post pictures just as soon as the email gets through. I'm just about ready to attach the transom in, i don't know how to calculate how much PB i need. Is there any sort of chart for how much PB coverage per square foot?

Hmmm Not sure on that one I haven't done a wood transom yet. Just guessing 2 to 3 qts maybe. If WOG don't chime in you may try to send him a PM.
