Re: bye bye Boats and Guns???????
I'm a mother and a boat-owner, but before you stereotype me, let me get this out of the way. I'm GLAD there are intelligent, responsible, law-abiding, level-headed armed men around me wherever I go, be it the lake or the grocery store. This is strongly qualified by the adjectives, by the way. And my instinct is that a few folks matching this description have posted here, but most who fall into that category would never broadcast the fact that they carry a gun, even anonymously over the internet.

My question is this... How many of you who carry have taken a handgun safety course? I have, and I choose not to arm myself, even in my home. These courses are NOT about "how not to shoot yourself in the foot while cleaning your gun", though these issues are covered, as well. The statistics and advice offered were excellent in my class. I'd highly recommend one for anyone who chooses to own a handgun.

In the spirit of education, here's some examples.

You are statistically far more likely to be shot by your own gun (or to have your loved ones shot)than you are to shoot someone else. Part of this stems from the belief that you can use a gun as a deterrant without firing it. Don't draw unless you're willing to fire immediately. Otherwise, your assailant will be likely to (1) get your gun away from you, or (2) draw and fire his own. I side with Moose-dude; give your wallet up first. You're not legally allowed to shoot someone to protect your wallet, anyway. A dead, unarmed mugger is going to land you in jail, in all likelihood. And don't fire unless you fully intend to kill. If your assailant is armed, and you injure him, you're probably history.

There are very few ways to have a handgun accessible in an emergency yet also safe from the younger residents/guests of a house.

Forget the "This vehicle protected by Smith & Wesson" bumper sticker. It's asking to have your car/truck broken into. If you do carry in the car, let any law enforcement officials know if stopped. If you're susceptible to road rage, don't carry.

If you're susceptible to depression or domestic disputes, don't own a gun.

You may be able to arm yourself legally, but there are very few instances where you can shoot legally. If you're armed, know exactly what those are. You can't shoot someone for insulting you, driving his boat too fast, sleeping with your wife or daughter (consensually), cutting you off in traffic, stealing your car, etc.

Ok, off my soapbox. Thanks to all you responsible and educated gun-owners for taking these risks so that I don't have to. Boat wisely and safely.
